300GT Wrap Arounds

Motor City Wash Works’ high-volume wrap-around line (300+ vehicles/hour rated), built with 2-inch pivot shafts and double-row spherical roller bearings; sold in entrance (300GTe), exit (300GTx), and combined (300GTex) configurations. See also: Wrap-Around; Motor City Wash Works.

AirBlade

Belanger’s top/hood-mounted dryer using twin 10-HP motors pushing air through a 2.5”x35” outlet to create a “wall of air” across the hood, windshield, and roof. See also: Dryer; H2Air; Belanger.

Anti-Jam Switch

A conveyor safety switch that detects a jam condition (e.g., a roller binding against a tire) and stops the conveyor before damage occurs. See also: Roller; E-Stop; Anti-Collision; Kick-Off Plate.

Application Arch (Applicator Arch)

An in-tunnel arch spanning the tunnel that dispenses a specific chemical treatment across the entire vehicle surface - presoak, sealer wax, triple foam, spot-free rinse, tire/wheel cleaner - chosen both to perform the treatment and to visually confirm to the customer that a paid add-on service is being applied. Arch (Car Wash Arch)

A curved or angular overhead/cross-tunnel structure fitted with nozzles or applicators that delivers a specific chemical or water stage to the vehicle as it passes beneath. Arches are generally named for their function (entry arch, application arch, foam arch, rinse arch, wax/drying-agent arch, spot-free rinse arch) and frequently double as a customer-facing “show” feature with LED lighting and graphics panels. Back-Out Bay

A self-serve wash bay design where the customer must reverse out after washing (as opposed to a drive-through bay, which they can pull straight out of) - a layout distinction operators use when describing site design and traffic flow. See also: Super Bay; Self-Serve Bay; Ingress/Egress.

Banana Peel Rail

Registered Sonny’s trademark for a car conveyor component used in automated car washes - a rail/track element of the conveyor system. Exact mechanical function not confirmed beyond the trademark’s goods description. See also: Conveyor; Guide Rails; Roller-On-Demand.

BayWash (Sonny’s BayWash In-Bays)

Registered Sonny’s Enterprises trademarks (BAYWASH and SONNY’S BAYWASH IN-BAYS) for automated, in-bay car wash machines: Sonny’s branded in-bay automatic (single-bay, non-conveyor) wash equipment line, available in models including the i5 and G2 rollover configurations, as distinct from the company’s conveyor tunnel equipment (as of 2016). Big Man Wrap

Registered Sonny’s trademark for a wrap-around washer (the rotating knuckled-arm brush assembly that cleans a vehicle’s vertical and side surfaces) for automated car washes; the name suggests a larger, heavy-duty wrap-brush variant. Comparable products include the 300GT Wrap Arounds (MCWW), Z-Wraps (AVW), and Gyro Wrap/QuickFire SureShot Wrap (Belanger). Also known as: Wrap-around brush/washer (generic term). Brine Tank

Buff-N-Dry

Registered Sonny’s trademark for a top-and-wrap-around dryer/buffer unit used in automated car washes - a combination drying/buffing piece of tunnel equipment. A related trademark, “Lava Buff N Dry,” places the name inside Sonny’s “Lava” finishing-treatment family. Also known as: Lava Buff N Dry (branded variant within the Lava series). Bug Removal

An automated in-tunnel cleaning stage targeting insect residue on vehicles, typically delivered via high-pressure jetting or specialized wash media designed to remove bugs without damaging paint. Bug Removal Arch

C-Channel

The C-shaped channel/track built into side washers, wraps, and rocker brushes into which strips of cloth, Neoglide, or Microclean media slide for quick replacement. Also known as: C-Loop (Motor City Wash Works branding). See also: Cloth; Neoglide; Microclean; Wrap-Around.

Carbon Tank

A tank in a spot-free/rinse-free water system that neutralizes chlorine and organic compounds in the incoming water supply before it proceeds to the RO membranes; kept effective by an automatic back-flushing head that keeps the carbon media clean. Chain Speed (Chain Speed / Conveyor Speed)

The rate of travel of the tunnel’s conveyor chain (or belt), which - together with equipment spacing - determines vehicle throughput in cars per hour. Chain-and-Roller Conveyor

The traditional conveyor design: a chain-driven system with rollers/pushers that engage a vehicle’s tire to pull or push it through the tunnel while the wheel continues to rotate - the long-standing industry default, increasingly positioned as “legacy” against belt systems. Chamois

Soft, absorbent cloths made from animal skin or a synthetic equivalent, used for final drying/wiping - notably in Wipe-O-Matic post-blower equipment that uses overlapping synthetic chamois cloths to absorb residual water. See also: Wipe-O-Matic; Dryer; Cloth.

Chamois Drying

A vehicle drying method using chamois cloth, either applied by hand by attendants in Full-Service or flex-serve locations, or delivered via automated retractable drying curtains in Express Exterior tunnels. Hand application delivers a premium finish; automated versions provide faster, labor-free drying. Chemical Metering and Feed System

The overall apparatus (proportioners, pump stations, plumbing) responsible for delivering chemicals from the backroom/equipment room out to the point of application in the wash tunnel. See also: Backroom; Proportioner; Applicator Pump Station; Hydrominder.

Cloth (Wash Cloth Media)

Tightly woven fabric strips, cut to length, mounted on mitters and side brushes as the customer-contact wash surface - the traditional friction media predating closed-cell foam alternatives. Also known as: Permacolor; no-fade cloth; felt. See also: Neoglide; Microclean; Chamois; C-Channel.

Conveyor

The motor-driven mechanism - belts, chains, pulleys, and rollers - that transports a vehicle through the tunnel past stationary wash equipment at a controlled speed, distinguishing tunnel/conveyor washes from in-bay automatics (where equipment moves around a stationary car). Correlator

An in-ground device at the conveyor entrance - a bank of free-spinning tubes/rollers (often UHMW plastic on stainless axles) - that lets a vehicle’s wheels slide laterally into alignment with the conveyor track as it loads, avoiding the skidding feel of older slide-plate designs. Dual-belt conveyors are marketed as eliminating the need for one. Also known as: Roll bar assembly (a related but distinct component - the rotating bar spanning the correlator that directs tires onto the conveyor). CTA (Chemical Tire Application / Chemical Tire Applicator)

Foaming or non-foaming nozzle system that applies tire and/or wheel cleaning chemical to the tire and wheel area - distinct from a tire-shine applicator, which applies dressing rather than cleaner. Also known as: White wall applicator; mag wheel applicator; wheel and tire chemical applicator; tire applicators. D88K

Drive Section

The section of the conveyor at the tunnel exit that houses the drive mechanism and (on over-under systems) a trap door that rises to let the roller/pusher drop down and return on the lower level. See also: Take-Up Section; Over-Under Conveyor; Kick-Off Plate; Conveyor.

Dryer (Dryer / Blower)

Equipment that blows high-volume air across a vehicle at the end of the wash to remove standing water; placement and design vary (arch-mounted, top/hood-mounted, side-mounted) and are frequently paired with VFD-controlled motors to manage noise and energy cost. Dual-Belt Conveyor (Flat Belt Conveyor)

A newer, low-profile conveyor design that carries the vehicle on two continuous flat belts (wheels do not rotate), rather than engaging individual wheels with chain-driven rollers. Marketed as smoother, safer (no correlator/guide-rail collision risk), and higher-throughput, but roughly 2.5-3x the install cost of chain-and-roller and requiring pit modification. E-Stop (Emergency Stop)

The emergency-stop control (button, cord, or automated trigger) that immediately halts the conveyor and/or tunnel equipment; used by loaders and attendants to prevent or stop a collision or entanglement, and triggered automatically by anti-collision vision systems like TESS or NoPileups. Eductor

The component within a hydrominder (or similar proportioner) that regulates flow rate through the venturi; metering tips screw or plug into the eductor’s venturi to set the mix ratio. See also: Hydrominder; Venturi; Metering Tip; Proportioner.

Entry Arch

The branded arch structure at the tunnel entrance, primarily a “first impression” marketing fixture (signage, LED animation) that may also confirm the customer’s purchased wash package and give entry instructions (neutral gear, hands off wheel, wipers off). Fleet-O-Matic

A registered Sonny’s trademark for motor vehicle washing and cleaning machines - a car wash machine product name/line, likely historical/legacy given the trademark’s naming style. See also: Sonny’s Tunnel Equipment. Unverified.

Foam Arch (Wall of Foam Arch)

An arch designed to blanket the vehicle in foam (soap, wax, or protectant foam), often used for the visually dramatic triple-foam or multi-color foam step that doubles as a marketing/upsell moment. Also covers the “foaming applicator arch” - an arch that covers the vehicle in foaming presoak before the main wash cycle. Also known as: Foaming Applicator Arch; Wall of Foam Arch; foam curtain. Foam Cloth (Foam Cloth / Sponge)

Lightweight closed-cell foam media (does not absorb water) commonly mounted on wrap-arounds, side brushes, and top brushes as the surface that contacts the vehicle. Also known as: Sponge; closed-cell foam media. See also: Neoglide; Microclean; Cloth; C-Channel.

Foot Valve

A one-way valve attached to the bottom of a chemical suction hose inside a drum, allowing chemical to flow in one direction only (out of the drum) and preventing backflow/loss of prime. See also: Backroom; Proportioner.

Fresh Water Bypass

A safety/continuity feature that protects the delivery pump and supplies fresh (non-RO) water to it if the reverse-osmosis system cannot produce spot-free water fast enough to meet demand, preventing pump damage or a service interruption. See also: Reverse Osmosis; Spot-Free Rinse; Water Reclaim.

Friction

A wash method in which cloth, brushes, foam, or other physical media contact and scrub the vehicle surface to remove dirt - the majority approach across the industry, as opposed to touchless. Also known as: Cloth friction wash. See also: Soft-Touch; Touchless; Neoglide; Mitter.

Front-to-Back Mitter (F2B)

A mitter variant that oscillates its cloth baskets in an entrance-to-exit (front-to-back) motion relative to vehicle travel, as opposed to side-to-side. MCWW’s version uses a 4-basket overlapping design specifically to avoid gaps (“skunk stripes”) between cleaning passes. Also known as: Front-to-back mitter curtain. FWP (Front Wheel Pull)

A conveyor configuration in which a roller rises behind the vehicle’s (typically left) front wheel, engages it, and pulls the car through the tunnel - as opposed to a rear-wheel-push design. Also known as: Front wheel pull. See also: RWP; Roller; Correlator; Chain-and-Roller Conveyor.

Gantry

An overhead structural frame spanning the tunnel (or bay) width, used to mount and support arches, brushes, or dryer blower housings above the vehicle path; in IBA contexts, “gantry” also names the moving machine frame that travels over the stationary vehicle. Used loosely as a general engineering term rather than a proprietary product name. No car-wash-specific definitional source using the exact word was located, but operator and business sources both use it in context (an IBA described as a “gantry/rollover machine”; an equipment strike described as a car “hitting a gantry”). Gator

Sonny’s registered trademark for blow dryers used in car washes; sold in the field as kits (e.g., “Sonny’s Black Blower Gator Kit”), suggesting “Gator” names a dryer-nozzle/blower attachment component rather than a full standalone dryer unit. See also: Dryer; Silencer.

Gator Gates

Sonny’s trademarked dryer nozzle/gate feature that can be automatically activated over an open truck bed (via Truck Bed Concierge) to redirect airflow away from the bed, protecting cargo from dryer blast while still finishing the rest of the vehicle. Guide Rails

Fixed rails running along the tunnel floor (often at the correlator/entrance and along the conveyor) that keep a vehicle’s tires tracking correctly and prevent it from drifting off the conveyor path; a tire brush’s retract stop position, for example, is set to stop just short of the guide rail. H2Air

Belanger’s arch-mounted, end-of-tunnel “rinsing and defoaming arch” that combines air blowers with low-pressure water to strip foam off a vehicle quickly without relying on high pressure; uses a “Twist-N-Flip” mechanism to coordinate blower and side manifolds off a single air cylinder. Halo Rinse

A high-pressure/high-volume rinse stage positioned to thoroughly remove all soap and triple-foam residue from the vehicle before the final (spot-free) rinse. High Side Washer (HSW)

A tall side-cleaning unit (typically brush or friction-cloth) that covers the full vertical run of a vehicle’s side, from the rocker panel up past the window ledge, distinguishing it from a shorter low side washer that covers only the lower portion. High-Pressure Pump Station

Backroom equipment that delivers high-pressure water to the tunnel’s high-pressure cleaning components (e.g., undercarriage blasters, high-pressure rinse arches, wheel blasters). See also: Applicator Pump Station; Backroom; Halo Rinse; Wheel Blaster.

Hybrid Technology

Car wash cleaning method combining mechanical friction (brushes, cloth, or wash media) with high-pressure water jets, used to safely clean a vehicle without harsh chemicals. Suited for Express Exterior and Flex-Serve where customer remains in vehicle; high-pressure zero-degree nozzles target hard-to-reach areas (grills, grooves, license plates, mirrors). IBA (In-Bay Automatic)

A wash format where the vehicle stays stationary in a single bay while the wash machine itself (rollover, gantry, or robotic arm) moves over and around it, as opposed to a tunnel/conveyor wash where the car moves past stationary equipment. IBAs can be built as touchless, friction/soft-touch, or hybrid systems, and are common at gas-station and convenience-store sites where footprint is limited. Kick-Off Plate

A component required on surface conveyors that causes the vehicle to roll forward slightly at the end of the conveyor, preventing the roller from jamming against the tire. See also: Surface Conveyor; Drive Section; Roller.

Liquid Applicator Arch

An arch that provides complete vehicle coverage with a liquid (non-foamed) presoak solution before the vehicle enters the wash cycle. A “liquid dual applicator arch” is a two-nozzle-bank variant. Also known as: Liquid dual applicator arch. See also: Arch; Presoak; Foam Arch; Application Arch.

Low Side Washer (LSW)

A shorter side-cleaning brush/wrap unit that targets only the lower body - rocker panel up to roughly the window ledge - as opposed to a high/full side washer that reaches the roofline. Also known as: LSW. See also: High Side Washer; Rocker Panel Brush; Wrap-Around.

Microclean

A twisted-fiber wash material with roughly a quarter-foot loft, used on mitters, side brushes, and wrap-arounds as an alternative to plain cloth or closed-cell foam. Brand origin unconfirmed. See also: Cloth; Neoglide; Foam Cloth; C-Channel. Unverified.

Mitter (Mitter Curtain)

A machine that suspends cloth, foam, or fiber wash material from a moving overhead basket and oscillates it against the horizontal (top) surfaces of a vehicle - hood, windshield, roof, trunk - simulating a hand-wash motion. Neoglide

A branded closed-cell foam wash material from Kirikian Industries used on wraps, mitters, side brushes, and top brushes in place of cloth; it does not absorb water and needs lubrication so it glides rather than drags on the vehicle surface. Marketed as a safer, gentler friction medium and central to the “soft touch is safe” argument for friction washes. Also sold under “Ryko Neoglide” branding via retrofit kits, suggesting a historical Ryko relationship not fully clarified. Over-Under Conveyor

A conveyor design with hidden pushers that travel continuously on a lower level beneath the tunnel floor (requiring a center trench); a pusher rises only when needed to engage and move a vehicle. Pendulum (Pendulum Wheel Cleaner)

Insider term for a high-pressure wheel-cleaning device that mechanically follows or tracks the wheel through its arc as the vehicle moves, without needing manual adjustment for different chain speeds. Sonny’s current catalog pairs the concept with a side-to-side brush unit in a single combo product, the Pendulum Side to Side 807 Combo, model-numbered 807. Permacolor (Permacolor / Durasoft / Microplush)

A family of registered Sonny’s trademarks for washing/drying/polishing curtains and strips - branded names for tunnel curtain/strip material (the fabric-like strips hung in wash bays to direct water/soap and buff the vehicle). Permacolor and Durasoft cover washing sheets/strips; Microplush names a plush/microfiber-style curtain material. Merged here because all three are the same goods class and are only variants of one another. “Permacolor” also appears in the CarWash College glossary as a near-synonym for no-fade cloth. Pit

The below-grade drainage collection area under a self-serve wash bay (or beneath a tunnel conveyor trench) that catches wash water and any spilled contaminants before they reach the sewer outlet - the place operators check water level in and, occasionally, must remediate after a spill. Poodle Brush

A rotating tire/wheel-well brush design - small-diameter, high-bristle-density brush used to scrub tire sidewalls and wheel wells. Appears both as a Sonny’s registered trademark and as a lowercase generic descriptive term in the CarWash College glossary (“tire brush cleaning wheels and rims”), suggesting the term functions generically industry-wide despite Sonny’s registration. Prep Gun

Rain Arch

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

A water-treatment process that pushes tap water through one or more semipermeable membranes under pressure to remove organic and suspended impurities and dissolved minerals, typically cutting total dissolved solids (TDS) by roughly 90-98%. Used to produce spot-free rinse water; produces some reject/waste water and requires periodic membrane maintenance. Also known as: RO; spot-free system. Rinse Arch

A tunnel arch fitted with nozzles that sprays clean (sometimes spot-free) water over the vehicle to remove leftover soap/chemical residue at a given point in the wash sequence. Rocker Panel Brush (Rocker Brush)

A short, adjustable brush (fiber or cloth) mounted low in the tunnel to scrub the rocker panel - the lower side body strip below the doors - and sometimes the lower wheel area; typically hydraulically driven with angle adjustment for different vehicle heights.
