Ammonium Bifluoride (ABF)

A fluoride-based acid salt used as an alternative or companion to hydrofluoric acid in some wheel-cleaning formulations; named alongside HF in the International Carwash Association’s 2015 advisory recommending discontinued use of both due to safety hazards. Backroom equipment that properly mixes and dispenses detergents and waxes for delivery out to tunnel arches and applicators. Arctic Shield (Arctic treatment series)

A family of Sonny’s Enterprises registered trademarks - Arctic Bath, Arctic Seal, Arctic Shine, and Arctic Fall (foam application and water rinsing/curing machines) - with “Arctic Shield” registered as the umbrella name for the combined foaming/rinsing/polishing application system. Armor All Professional

The commercial/tunnel-market line of the Armor All brand, distributed exclusively to car washes by National Carwash Solutions. Product history includes Heavy Duty Car Wash (1982, the first Armor All product made specifically for car wash use), Tire Foam Protectant (1992), Ultra Shine Wash and Wax (2007, carnauba-based), and Ceramic Seal Technology (2020, silicon-dioxide-based hydrophobic protectant). Backroom (Chemical Room / Equipment Room)

The equipment room - separate from the tunnel itself - that houses the “brains” of the wash: the control panel (power, timing, vehicle measurement), and the chemical mixing/dispensing systems that inject a precise ratio of chemical to water before piping the mix out to tunnel arches and applicators. Bug Prep (Bug Remover)

A high-pH alkaline cleaner, sold by suppliers such as Ver-tech Labs and Stinger Chemical, applied at the prep-gun stage (front of the wash, often hand-applied) specifically to soften and lift baked-on insect splatter, tree sap, and bird droppings before they reach the main wash chemistry. Bullseye (Bullseye / Bullseye Ultra / Bullseye Concentrate Delivery System)

A tunnel-applied protectant marketed as “ceramic,” typically silicon-dioxide-based, that chemically bonds to the paint surface to create a harder, more hydrophobic, longer-lasting protective layer than a standard wax; sold as a premium upsell tier. Industry commentary notes tunnel “ceramic” products trade off some durability of a professionally applied ceramic coating for speed of application, and that “ceramic” on a tunnel menu is not a standardized formulation. Chlorination

The process of adding chlorine to water to inhibit bacterial growth, typically as part of municipal water treatment or as a supply-side water quality step upstream of the wash. See also: Ozonation; Carbon Tank.

Deionized Water (DI Water)

Water treated by ion-exchange resin, which swaps mineral ions for hydrogen and hydroxide ions and can drive TDS toward zero - a purer result than reverse osmosis alone. The resin exhausts quickly on hard water, making DI relatively expensive at volume; in car washes it is typically used to “polish” RO output or for lower-volume finishing applications rather than as the sole treatment. Dema Injector (Dema Solenoid)

A compact, low-maintenance chemical injector/proportioning device that injects fluid (and sometimes air) into a water line under pressure; installable in multiple orientations and adjustable for injection rate during operation. “Dema solenoids” are the stainless-steel valve components used in soap, wax, tire-cleaner, or presoak delivery systems. Detergent (Detergent vs. Soap)

The synthetic surfactant-based cleaning product used in car washes, referred to informally throughout the industry (and by consumers) as “soap” even though true soap (a fatty-acid salt) is rarely what is used - detergents are synthetic surfactant blends chosen for cleaning power, foam behavior, and rinsability without the scum/spotting issues of true soap. Dilution Ratio

The ratio of water to chemical concentrate set at the proportioner (e.g., “150:1” meaning 150 parts water to 1 part concentrate). Drying Agent

A chemical (commonly a cationic surfactant or hydrophobic polymer, historically petroleum-based) applied at or after the final rinse to lower water’s surface tension so it sheets or beads off the vehicle quickly rather than sitting in droplets, reducing water spotting and drying time. Also known as: Rinse aid (the Carwash College glossary’s preferred term); sheeting agent; water repellent; cheater wax (when applied via a drying-agent arch). Dwell Time

The length of time a chemical is left in contact with the vehicle surface before being rinsed or agitated, allowing the reaction (loosening soil, etching mineral deposits) to complete. Foam Bath

A triple-foam (or single-foam) formulation that functions as a cleaner/conditioner - essentially a foaming soap step, applied earlier in the wash to clean rather than protect. Fusion Rain Repel

Sonny’s/Diamond Shine glass-specific water-beading treatment - registered as an anti-fog surface coating (a water-repellent chemical for eliminating moisture/condensation on glass and mirrors) and appearing as the sixth step of Diamond Shine’s Fusion System. Its relationship to Diamond Shine’s separately marketed “Ceramic Rain Repel” is a naming-similarity inference, not confirmed. HF Industry Controversy (HF prevalence and ICA advisory)

Despite HF’s known hazards, industry-estimated usage in U.S. car washes reportedly rose rather than fell: leaders estimated under 25% of washes used HF-based wheel cleaner in 2008, rising to an estimated 50% by 2015. In August 2015 the International Carwash Association issued an advisory recommending operators discontinue use of both hydrofluoric acid and ammonium bifluoride (ABF) wheel cleaners, citing CDC identification of less-hazardous alternatives and anticipating increased OSHA scrutiny. Advocates for phasing HF out also point to hidden costs - concrete/equipment corrosion, PPE and training requirements, higher workers’ comp premiums. Separately, California’s DTSC has proposed listing cleaning products containing HF as a “Priority Product” under its Safer Consumer Products program. High pH Presoak

Hot Wax

A wax/sealer product applied heated (or marketed as heat-activated) in the tunnel to improve flow, bonding, and gloss versus a cold-applied wax; sold as a mid-tier upsell between a basic sealer wax and a full ceramic/graphene package. Hydrofluoric Acid (HF)

A highly hazardous acid historically used in some car wash wheel cleaners for its fast, cheap contaminant-removal power. Unlike most acids, HF does not cause an immediately felt skin burn - it penetrates tissue and attacks bone, and even low-concentration exposure (under 2%) over a small body-surface area can be fatal; inhalation is also a serious hazard, especially from spray application. Hydrominder

A proportioner that mixes chemical concentrate with water using a float assembly to control the solution level in a mixing tank, with an internal eductor/venturi assembly regulating flow rate; metering tips control the ratio of concentrate to water. “Hydrominder”/“HydroMinder” are Hydro Systems product names, though the term is used generically industry-wide for this device category. Hyper-Concentrate

A marketing/product term for chemical concentrate sold at substantially higher strength than conventional “concentrate,” designed to be diluted at the proportioner - the pitch is that operators receive a container of nearly pure chemistry rather than a mix of chemistry and water, cutting shipping volume, plastic waste, and (proponents argue) cost-per-car despite a higher per-container price. The final rinse stage using low-mineral (low total-dissolved-solids) water - produced via reverse osmosis and/or deionization - so that as water evaporates off the vehicle it leaves minimal to no mineral spotting, unlike ordinary tap/city water. “Spot-free” is used industry-wide as effectively synonymous with reverse osmosis, though DI water is also used to achieve it. Stacking (Chemical Application)

Applying trifoam or conditioner directly on top of presoak chemicals still on the vehicle, before the high-pressure rinse, rather than rinsing between each chemical step. Operators report it extends dwell time and saves a rinse pass, lowering water use and shortening cycle time. Surfactant

A compound that reduces the surface tension of a liquid so it spreads across or penetrates a solid surface more easily - the core active-ingredient class behind presoaks, detergents, foams, and wetting agents. Three-Color Foamer

Tire Dressing (Tire Shine)

Titration

A quantitative chemical-analysis technique used by car wash operators to determine the actual concentration of an acidic or alkaline chemical solution (presoak, detergent) by reacting it with a reagent of known concentration - done on a schedule to verify the proportioner is dosing correctly and catch drift before it affects wash quality or cost. Total Body Protectant

A tunnel-menu term for a full-vehicle protectant/sealant application (as opposed to a glass-only or wheel-only treatment) - a package-level upsell name rather than a specific chemistry. Exact formulation varies by operator and vendor; no single authoritative definition or vendor origin was confirmed. Also known as: Total vehicle protectant; full-body sealant. Triple Foam (Tri-Foam)

A colored, typically tri-color foam applied via an arch or shower-head applicator partway through the tunnel. It serves a dual purpose: a visual “show” effect for the customer (three colors of foam mixing and running over the vehicle) and an actual cleaning/conditioning or wax step, depending on formulation. Two-Step Presoak (Two-Step Washing)

A presoak protocol that applies both an acidic (low pH) and an alkaline (high pH) product in sequence, one targeting organic soils and the other mineral soils, so the combination removes more contamination than either alone. Recommended dwell time is roughly 10-12 seconds per step. Sources disagree on order: one recommends acid first, then alkaline at double strength, while another notes operators successfully reverse it. Venturi

A tube constricted in the middle and flared at both ends; as fluid passes through the constriction, velocity increases and pressure decreases (the Venturi effect), which is exploited in proportioners and eductors to draw and mix concentrated chemical into a water stream. Volumetric Metering (Volumetric Analysis)

A method of verifying chemical dosing by directly measuring the physical amount of product used over a period, as opposed to titration’s droplet-increment measurement - offered as a more precise alternative/complement to titration for catching dosing drift. Water Hardness

The presence of soluble metal salts - principally calcium and magnesium, sometimes iron and manganese - in water at levels sufficient to interfere with cleaning (scale formation, reduced detergent effectiveness, spotting). Water Reclaim (Water Reclamation)

A system that collects wash-cycle wastewater, filters and treats it to remove contaminants and reduce odor, sometimes via ozone injection, and reuses it for presoaking, washing, and rinsing, reducing fresh (municipal or well) water draw and sewer discharge volume. Commonly cited as a 70%+ reduction, or bringing freshwater use down to roughly 30-35 gallons per wash versus roughly 80 gallons per wash without reclaim. Essential for reducing utility costs and meeting environmental regulations in water-scarce markets (as of 2016, per Sonny’s “Car Wash Programs For New Investors” guide, and may have changed). Water Softener

Equipment that removes minerals (calcium, magnesium, sometimes iron/manganese) and chlorine from hard water before it is used in detergent applications or fed into a spot-free/RO system; softened water improves detergent cleaning performance and protects downstream equipment (like RO membranes) from scale. Water Stabilizer

A wheel/tire cleaner that uses an acid (phosphoric, hydrochloric, or an organic acid blend, historically also hydrofluoric acid) to chemically dissolve mineral and metal-oxide soils like baked-on brake dust and hard-water scale into soluble salts that rinse away. Effective on heavily neglected wheels but can etch bare aluminum, polished metal, or anodized finishes if over-concentrated, over-dwelled, or allowed to dry. Wheel Cleaner (Non-Acid)

A pH-balanced or near-neutral wheel/tire cleaner that relies on surfactant systems (anionic/nonionic blends, often with mild solvents) to lift and emulsify soil rather than dissolving it chemically. Safer on clear-coated wheels, chrome, polished aluminum, and anodized surfaces; the default choice for tunnels washing mixed/unknown wheel finishes, but it cannot remove iron embedded in a coating. Zep Mega Wash

A concentrated, high-foaming car wash detergent sold by Zep Inc. under its Vehicle Care line - an instance of the generic detergent/soap product category. Zep’s Vehicle Care division was originally built from Zep’s 2012 acquisition of Ecolab’s vehicle care business and was later acquired by National Carwash Solutions.
