Informal operator slang. Definitions reflect observed usage; unverified terms are marked. Part of the [Car Wash Industry Glossary](/glossary/overview).

Choking Your Business

coinless (generic)

Industry shorthand/adjective for a self-serve or IBA payment setup that eliminates coin acceptors in favor of card, mobile app, or contactless payment only. Distinct from the vendor "Coinless" (proper noun) - used generically in forum/trade-press discussion of self-serve bay upgrades. *Also known as: cashless. Comp (Comp a Wash)

To give a customer a free wash (or other complimentary service) as goodwill, most often after a damage claim, service failure, or long wait - short for "complimentary." Day Zero

DRB's internal name for the on-site installation day of a SiteWatch-to-Patheon conversion, as distinct from "Pre-Day Zero" prep work (recording MAC addresses, gathering EMV hardware serial numbers, pre-configuring the Patheon Portal) done in advance. Frothy Market

Green Light

DRB's internal go/no-go signal a field tech gives to the Data Migration Specialist (DMS) once every wash-critical function at a site has been tested post-conversion (peripherals working, a test wash sent from each terminal and marked complete by the tunnel) - the trigger to begin the live customer-data migration into Patheon. Gremlins

Humorous catch-all operator term for unexplained equipment failures, especially ones that seem to strike during an owner's vacation or time away from the site - "the gremlins get into the equipment.". *See also: [Flying Blind](/glossary/operations#flying-blind); [EOD](/glossary/kiosks-payment#eod-emergency-operations-disk); [Black Box](/glossary/tunnel-controllers#black-box-black-box-event-recorder). Neutral, No Brakes!

The standard loading instruction called out or posted at the entrance of a conveyorized tunnel: the driver shifts into neutral and keeps their foot off the brake so the conveyor rollers can push the vehicle through the wash without resistance. Braking against the roller can cause the vehicle to pop off the roller, stall the line, or trigger a pileup, so loaders repeat the phrase to every car as it loads. Often extended with hands off the wheel and wipers off. *Also known as: Neutral no brakes (unpunctuated field usage); Neutral, foot off the brake. Lined Up N Deep (Lined Up \[N] Deep)

Operator shorthand for queue length at capacity - e.g., "lined up 7 deep" means seven cars are waiting in line. Pileup (pile-up / pack)

Operator slang for an in-tunnel rear-end collision - the event NoPileups is named for and designed to prevent, typically caused by a stopped or slow-moving vehicle (often due to AEB triggering) getting hit by the vehicle behind it on the conveyor. Operators also describe the tunnel itself as "packed" or "piled up.". *Also known as: pack; packed tunnel. Skunk Stripes

Insider slang for the visible gaps or streaks left on a vehicle's surface where overlapping cleaning elements (e.g., mitter baskets) fail to fully overlap, leaving thin unwashed/unwiped bands. Top Wash

The meaning depends on the operator's package-naming scheme. In at least one documented operator menu, "top wash" names the entry-level, cheapest tier, not the premium one, sitting below a middle tier and paid buy-up tiers; readers should not assume "top" universally means "premium" without checking a given site's menu. *Also known as: Standard wash (used as a rough peer term in the same source). Wrap Sequencing

Insider shorthand, seen in operator forum discussion, for how a tunnel controller times and sequences mitter/wrap-arm equipment (the rotating cloth arms that wash a vehicle's front and sides). Cited by a MacNeil-tunnel operator as decisive in a controller upgrade decision ("a must because of the way MacNeil controls their wraps"), with another operator skeptical a competing controller could replicate the sequencing. *Also known as: "wraps" (the equipment itself - wrap arms / mitter arms).
