# Chemistry and Water Systems

> Presoaks, triple foam, drying agents, and the backroom equipment that doses them. This page defines wash chemistry terms and the water treatment systems behind a spot-free rinse.

  Ammonium Bifluoride (ABF)
</h3>

A fluoride-based acid salt used as an alternative or companion to hydrofluoric acid in some wheel-cleaning formulations; named alongside HF in the International Carwash Association's 2015 advisory recommending discontinued use of both due to safety hazards.

General term for any device (nozzle, brush, pad, or shower-head style manifold) that delivers a chemical product (soap, wax, tire dressing, sealant) onto the vehicle, as distinct from equipment whose primary job is mechanical scrubbing or drying.

A family of Sonny's Enterprises registered trademarks - Arctic Bath, Arctic Seal, Arctic Shine, and Arctic Fall (foam application and water rinsing/curing machines) - with "Arctic Shield" registered as the umbrella name for the combined foaming/rinsing/polishing application system. Structurally parallels the "Lava" series.

</h3>

The commercial/tunnel-market line of the Armor All brand, distributed exclusively to car washes by National Carwash Solutions. Product history includes Heavy Duty Car Wash (1982, the first Armor All product made specifically for car wash use), Tire Foam Protectant (1992), Ultra Shine Wash and Wax (2007, carnauba-based), and Ceramic Seal Technology (2020, silicon-dioxide-based hydrophobic protectant). Armor All originated from a 1960s polymer formula ("Tri-Don"), was rebranded Armor All in 1972, and is currently owned by Energizer Holdings.

The equipment room - separate from the tunnel itself - that houses the "brains" of the wash: the control panel (power, timing, vehicle measurement), and the chemical mixing/dispensing systems that inject a precise ratio of chemical to water before piping the mix out to tunnel arches and applicators.

A high-pH alkaline cleaner, sold by suppliers such as Ver-tech Labs and Stinger Chemical, applied at the prep-gun stage (front of the wash, often hand-applied) specifically to soften and lift baked-on insect splatter, tree sap, and bird droppings before they reach the main wash chemistry.

Diamond Shine/Sonny's branded chemistry line and, specifically, a proprietary chemical measurement and storage system using 2.5-gallon induction-sealed concentrate containers, designed to standardize dosing accuracy across the Fusion chemistry line. A "Bullseye Ultra" product variant also appears on Diamond Shine's site without a stated formulation/purpose.

Industry commentary notes tunnel "ceramic" products trade off some durability of a professionally applied ceramic coating for speed of application, and that "ceramic" on a tunnel menu is not a standardized formulation.

</h3>

The process of adding chlorine to water to inhibit bacterial growth, typically as part of municipal water treatment or as a supply-side water quality step upstream of the wash.

<h3 id="deionized-water-di-water">
  Deionized Water (DI Water)
</h3>

Water treated by ion-exchange resin, which swaps mineral ions for hydrogen and hydroxide ions and can drive TDS toward zero - a purer result than reverse osmosis alone. The resin exhausts quickly on hard water, making DI relatively expensive at volume; in car washes it is typically used to "polish" RO output or for lower-volume finishing applications rather than as the sole treatment.

</h3>

A compact, low-maintenance chemical injector/proportioning device that injects fluid (and sometimes air) into a water line under pressure; installable in multiple orientations and adjustable for injection rate during operation. "Dema solenoids" are the stainless-steel valve components used in soap, wax, tire-cleaner, or presoak delivery systems.

The synthetic surfactant-based cleaning product used in car washes, referred to informally throughout the industry (and by consumers) as "soap" even though true soap (a fatty-acid salt) is rarely what is used - detergents are synthetic surfactant blends chosen for cleaning power, foam behavior, and rinsability without the scum/spotting issues of true soap.

A pressure-washing technique/setting where cleaning chemical is injected into the water stream after (downstream of) the pump, at low pressure, typically for applying soap before switching to high-pressure rinse - the standard method for self-serve chemical application.

</h3>

A chemical (commonly a cationic surfactant or hydrophobic polymer, historically petroleum-based) applied at or after the final rinse to lower water's surface tension so it sheets or beads off the vehicle quickly rather than sitting in droplets, reducing water spotting and drying time.

</h3>

The length of time a chemical is left in contact with the vehicle surface before being rinsed or agitated, allowing the reaction (loosening soil, etching mineral deposits) to complete. Too little dwell time under-cleans; too much risks surface damage, especially with acid wheel cleaners.

<h3 id="hf-industry-controversy-hf-prevalence-and-ica-advisory">
  HF Industry Controversy (HF prevalence and ICA advisory)
</h3>

Despite HF's known hazards, industry-estimated usage in U.S. car washes reportedly rose rather than fell: leaders estimated under 25% of washes used HF-based wheel cleaner in 2008, rising to an estimated 50% by 2015. In August 2015 the International Carwash Association issued an advisory recommending operators discontinue use of both hydrofluoric acid and ammonium bifluoride (ABF) wheel cleaners, citing CDC identification of less-hazardous alternatives and anticipating increased OSHA scrutiny. Advocates for phasing HF out also point to hidden costs - concrete/equipment corrosion, PPE and training requirements, higher workers' comp premiums. Separately, California's DTSC has proposed listing cleaning products containing HF as a "Priority Product" under its Safer Consumer Products program. Prevalence percentages are trade-press industry estimates, not independently verified.

An alkaline presoak (above pH 7) formulated to break down organic soils - road film, bug splatter, grease/oil, and bird droppings - via alkaline builders and surfactants.

A wax/sealer product applied heated (or marketed as heat-activated) in the tunnel to improve flow, bonding, and gloss versus a cold-applied wax; sold as a mid-tier upsell between a basic sealer wax and a full ceramic/graphene package. No source found explains the "why heated" mechanism in depth.

</h3>

A highly hazardous acid historically used in some car wash wheel cleaners for its fast, cheap contaminant-removal power.   Wheel Cleaner (Acid)
</h3>

A wheel/tire cleaner that uses an acid (phosphoric, hydrochloric, or an organic acid blend, historically also hydrofluoric acid) to chemically dissolve mineral and metal-oxide soils like baked-on brake dust and hard-water scale into soluble salts that rinse away. Effective on heavily neglected wheels but can etch bare aluminum, polished metal, or anodized finishes if over-concentrated, over-dwelled, or allowed to dry.

  Wheel Cleaner (Non-Acid)
</h3>

A pH-balanced or near-neutral wheel/tire cleaner that relies on surfactant systems (anionic/nonionic blends, often with mild solvents) to lift and emulsify soil rather than dissolving it chemically. Safer on clear-coated wheels, chrome, polished aluminum, and anodized surfaces; the default choice for tunnels washing mixed/unknown wheel finishes, but it cannot remove iron embedded in a coating.

  Zep Mega Wash
</h3>

A concentrated, high-foaming car wash detergent sold by Zep Inc. under its Vehicle Care line - an instance of the generic detergent/soap product category. Zep's Vehicle Care division was originally built from Zep's 2012 acquisition of Ecolab's vehicle care business and was later acquired by National Carwash Solutions.
