# Deductions

> Understand exactly how pricing adjustments work in FlexWash, and when to use each deduction type with confidence.

\
In FlexWash, a **deduction** is any adjustment that reduces the price of a wash or membership by creating a negative line item on an order. Deductions are intentionally separated by **purpose**, not just by amount.

Using the correct deduction type ensures accurate reporting, cleaner operations, and a better experience for both customers and staff.

## Discounts

**Discounts** are staff-applied deductions used for quick, manual price adjustments at the point of sale.

**Use Discounts when:**

* An attendant needs flexibility.
* The situation is one-off or situational.
* No tracking or automation is required.

**Common use cases:**

* Local customer courtesy.
* Manager-approved price adjustments.

<Tip>

**<u>Example:</u>**

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/flexwash/BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV/configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/ddctdcnt1.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV&q=85&s=1f04cb514de992a8bfcf01d23947fa81" alt="Ddctdcnt1" width="1677" height="522" data-path="configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/ddctdcnt1.png" />

The example above shows a **Discount** configured to give a \$5 deduction to the wash package called "Gold package".

* Manually applied.
* Available on the Pay Tablet.
* No eligibility rules.
* Applies immediately.

Once the qualifying wash is selected, the discount appears in the Add-Ons section as shown below:

## Membership Benefits

**Membership Benefits** provide added value to memberships through controlled discounts, free services, or special pricing. These benefits reward loyalty, and encourage continued enrollment.

Benefits can be applied **automatically** or **offered manually by attendants** when a member visits, depending on how the benefit is configured.

Benefits can also be configured as **recurring** or **interval-based**. Interval-based benefits can be limited by **day, week, or month**, with a defined **maximum number of uses per interval**.

This flexibility allows operators to balance automation, personalization, and cost control while delivering consistent member value.

**Use Membership Benefits when:**

* You want to reward loyalty.
* You want to offer add-ons or different wash packages at special prices to your members exclusively.

**<u>Example:</u>**

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/flexwash/BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV/configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/ddctnbnft1.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV&q=85&s=12af72064db89503305063946a266996" alt="Ddctnbnft1" width="1140" height="705" data-path="configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/ddctnbnft1.png" />

Active members receive **50% off Interior Vacuum services**.

* Applies automatically.
* Visible at checkout.
* Not available to non-members.
* Encourages add-on usage.

See below how this member gets the Interior Vacuum at a better price than a non member would:

## Upsells

**Upsells** are guided deductions designed to move customers to a higher-value wash or membership package.

**Use Upsells when:**

* You want to increase your gross revenue.
* Attendants are actively selling.
* The higher tier provides more value long-term.
* Upsells reduce the *upgrade gap* rather than the base price.

<Tip>
  [Click here for more information on how to configure Upsells.](/configuration/pricing-and-promotions/upsells)
</Tip>

**<u>Example:</u>**

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/flexwash/BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV/configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/psllddctn1.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV&q=85&s=60a344ba2f32f350a5fadbd1c29abcde" alt="Psllddctn1" width="1620" height="794" data-path="configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/psllddctn1.png" />

The example above shows an **Upsell** configured to offer a deducted price on the first month for the top two membership packages.

As shown below, the attendant is prompted to offer the top-tier memberships for **\$10 on the first month**.

* Includes a scripted pitch.
* Optional image shown to the customer.
* Normal pricing resumes after the promo period.

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/flexwash/BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV/configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/ddctnpsll22.gif?s=8ef3e199658a80abd77deedfdfb17581" alt="Ddctnpsll22" width="1244" height="598" data-path="configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/ddctnpsll22.gif" />

## Downsells

**Downsells** are retention-focused deductions offered when a customer attempts to cancel a membership.

**Use Downsells when:**

* A customer is at risk of churning.
* You want to preserve recurring revenue.
* The customer would accept a lower tier rather than cancel entirely.

<Tip>
  [Click here for more information about Downsells.](/configuration/pricing-and-promotions/downsells)
</Tip>

**<u>Example:</u>**

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/flexwash/BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV/configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/dwnsllddctn1.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV&q=85&s=db133bf3b6edffb61a7296ad45ce36f7" alt="Dwnsllddctn1" width="1641" height="734" data-path="configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/dwnsllddctn1.png" />

In the example above, the **Downsell** is configured for customers enrolled in the "Greatest" membership package.

* Triggered during cancellation.
* Targets specific source packages.
* Can include eligibility rules (LTV, wash count, etc.).
* Optional pitch or prompt for staff.

This keeps the customer active while reducing churn.

## Promotions

**Promotions** are customer-initiated deductions, typically redeemed via a QR code, application code, or online checkout.

**Use Promotions when:**

* The customer discovers the offer outside the wash (ads, email, flyers).
* You want redemption to be controlled or limited.
* The offer should not be applied manually by staff.

**Common use cases:**

* Social media or Google Ads.
* Introductory membership offers.
* Online-only pricing.

<Tip>
  [Click here for more information on how to set up Promotions.](/configuration/pricing-and-promotions/promotions)
</Tip>

**<u>Example:</u>**

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/flexwash/BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV/configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/ddctprmtn1.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV&q=85&s=08f169db4abb050d186369bd712bdb60" alt="Ddctprmtn1" width="1624" height="732" data-path="configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/ddctprmtn1.png" />

The example above shows a **Promotion** configured to give **\$10 off the first month of a membership**, redeemable once per vehicle with a QR code.

* Applies only to membership packages.
* Fixed \$10 deduction.
* First billing cycle only.
* Requires an application code.

When the code is scanned at the Pay Tablet, the deduction is automatically applied. See below how the attendant scans the code on the Pay Tablet and the special price is applied afterwards:

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/flexwash/BmCPR0FRJ0vihLVV/configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/ddctprmtn2.gif?s=c290d18de54c0eb537ec8d657c7ae70c" alt="Ddctprmtn2" width="1272" height="626" data-path="configuration/pricing-and-promotions/deductions/ddctprmtn2.gif" />

## Choosing the Right Deduction

| **Goal**                          | **Use This:**      |
| --------------------------------- | ------------------ |
| Market an offer externally | Promotion |
| Apply a one-off price adjustment  | Discount           |
| Upgrade customers to higher tiers | Upsell |
| Prevent membership cancellation   | Downsell           |
| Reward active members | Membership Benefit |

If you’re unsure which deduction to use, start with the **customer’s intent**:

* Did they discover the offer themselves? → Promotion.
* Is staff intervening? → Discount, Upsell, or Downsell.
* Are they already a member? → Membership Benefit.
